Necessity of Water Resources Professionals

Stream, as the main source of usage water, has always been the recipient of wastes discharge from human activities, be it domestic sources, industrial or agricultural effluents. In line with the unbalance of water availability and demand, the provision of clean water has been a crucial issue for over the last two centuries. On the other hand, due to significant land use change occurred in most river basins, inappropriate drainage system, and weak solid waste management, flooding is also still a serious problem in many countries. A proactive action is therefore needed to communicate the above issues to stakeholders and professional to solve the problems. As leading universities, Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (UNPAR) and Hohai University are intending to get involved in provision of water resources professionals through a joint degree program in water resources engineering.

University Katolik Parahyangan

Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (UNPAR) was founded in Bandung City, West Java Province on 17 January 1955. Based on the accreditation by National Accreditation Body for Higher Education (BAN‐PT), UNPAR is recognized as one of the best universities in Indonesia. Supported by experience and qualified educational staffs, flexible and adaptive curriculum, excellent facilities and academic atmosphere, UNPAR plays important roles in various academic activities at national and international level. UNPAR is one in the 50 Indonesian Promising Universities. There are about 786 lecturers and more than 10 thousand students coming from various cultures, ethnic, religion, and social economic backgrounds. UNPAR has vocational, bachelor, and postgraduate programs.

Honai University

Founded in 1915 in Nanjing City, Hohai University was established as one of the 75 state key universities and directly administered under the direct jurisdiction of Ministry of Education of China. As a comprehensive university, it focuses its research and academic development in engineering i.e. hydraulic and water resources in coordinating with a wide array of disciplines covering other engineering fields, science, economics, management, liberal arts, and law. At present, Hohai University is playing even more fundamental role through its state key laboratory of hydrology-water resources and hydraulic engineering (Hydro-Lab).

Joint Degree Program

The joint degree program in water resources engineering is developed for duration of 24 months (2 years) and led towards Magister Teknik (M.T.) degree from UNPAR and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree from Hohai University in the respective field upon successful completion of 36 credits. At first student will spend their 1st semester at UNPAR, 2nd and 3rd semester at Hohai University, and 4th semester at UNPAR. Thesis defense will be conducted at both universities.
